The Eyes of Texas and the college football universe are gazing upon the football program at the University of Texas with concern today, after the Longhorns dropped a big smelly cowpie at midfield of Ohio Stadium in a 14-7 loss to the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes this past Saturday.
The Longhorns, ranked No, 1 when they traveled to Columbus, Ohio this past weekend, are scratching their helmets and trying to figure out how to get back into the win column when they host San Jose State on Sep. 6. The Spartans were 2-point losers to Central Michigan last Friday.
Date: Saturday, Sep. 6
Time: 11 AM CST.
Location: Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, TX
TV: ABC
The two teams have played each other only once, a 56-0 rout by the Longhorns in 2017. In that game, quarterback Sam Ehlinger passed for 222 yards and a TD; running back Chris Warren rushed for 166 yards and two scores; and Holton Hill returned an INT 45-yards for a touchdown.
Quarterback Walker Eget: 308 yards last week. Wide receiver Danny Scudero: nine passes for 189 yards.
Linebacker Jordan Pollard leads the defense. Pollard recorded 115 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and one INT in 2024 and was a first-team All-Mountain West selection. He racked up 15 stops against Central Michigan.
Quarterback Arch Manning threw for 170 yards and a TD against the Buckeyes. Manning also threw an interception.
Running back Quintrevion Wisner led with 80 yards, but was held out of the end zone.
Safety Michael Taafe and LB Anthony Hill, Jr. combined for 15 tackles against the Buckeyes. This duo, along with defensive end Colin Simmons, forms the nucleus of the Longhorns defense.
The Longhorns are missing Matthew Golden on the perimeter and need to identify a deep threat playmaker in the passing game. No rushing touchdowns could be a concern. The offensive line for Texas, with four new starters, allowed the Buckeyes only one sack.
With that said, look for Texas (-35.5-point favorites) to bounce back with anger and a chip on their shoulder against the Spartans. Final Score: Texas 41 – San Jose State 3.
