A ferocious band of Tigers beat back an invading pack of wild dogs from North Louisiana, the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech.
When the battle was over, those dogs from up north limped back to the sleepy college town of Ruston with their tails between their legs after suffering a 23-7 loss to homestanding Tigers.
To start the game, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw an interception. Kicker Damian Ramos missed a field goal attempt. Then, LSU woke up.
Nussmeier threw a dart to wide receiver Nic Anderson (Oklahoma transfer) for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead after an 11 play, 98-yard drive.
Late in the third quarter, running back Caden Durham added a rushing touchdown to increase the lead to 17-0.
Louisiana Tech finally got on the board at the 4:00 mark of the fourth quarter on a 33-yard TD pass from Blake Baker to Devin Gandy to make the score 20-7.
LSU receiver/kick returner Barion Brown took the ensuing kickoff back to around midfield with 3:45 left in the game. Then true freshmen running back Harlem Berry busted a 43-yard run to set up first and goal for LSU.
LSU added three more points to make their lead 23-7 late in the fourth quarter.
Final Score: LSU 23 – La. Tech 7
Nussmeier was 26 of 41 (63 percent) for 237 yards and a TD. He did throw one INT. Brown and Aaron Anderson paced the LSU receiving corps and combined for 17 catches for 167 yards.
The LSU defense smothered La. Tech all night, holding them to 154 total yards for the game. Whit Weeks led the Tigers with 10 stops.
La. Tech’s defense was impressive and kept the game closer than it needed to be. The Bulldogs posted three sacks and eight tackles for loss against the No. 3 Tigers.
A little something extra…
LSU won this game like they were supposed to, with a mix of run and pass, and a stifling defense. However, they must clean up the penalties and find more production in the running game.
The No. 13 Florida Gators come to town next week, coming off an 18-16 loss to the South Florida Bulls (2-0) at home in The Swamp on Saturday.
In the series history, the Tigers have outscored the Lions 79-7 and own a 2-0 record.
