It is a college football rivalry that began in the late 19th century. That’s 131 years of good old-fashioned gridiron hate. The Billy Cannon punt return vs Ole Miss in 1959. In 1972, time stood still. In 2023, LSU piled up 637 total yards and scored 49 points in Oxford. It wasn’t enough to win. Overall, the No. 4 LSU Tigers own a 64-42-4 record over the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels.

The Rebels offense is averaging 44.8 points per game. That is good enough for 12th nationally. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss (a transfer from Div. II Ferris State) has taken over the QB1 position. Chambliss has accounted for 914 total yards six touchdowns thus far this season.
Running back Kewan Lacy has gained 358 yards and seven TDs, including two in a 45-10 win over Tulane.
On the perimeter, Chambliss will throw to the team’s leading receiver Harrison Wallace III. Wallace has 16 catches for 343 yards and two touchdowns. He averages 21.44 per catch.
The LSU defense is a championship-caliber unit. They rank nationally in the following categories:
Davhon Keys and West Weeks are the leading tacklers for the Tigers. Keys has posted 30 tackles and Weeks has 25 stops to his credit.
In the LSU secondary, five players have INTs through four games. Dashawn Spears has two, and returned one for a touchdown in the win over Florida.
Except for the 56-10 destruction of FCS member Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday, the Tigers have struggled. They have found it challenging to put points on the board. The schedule only gets tougher from here on out.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, playing hurt, has not helped the situation. His torso injury has affected his throwing mechanics. A preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, Nussmeier has thrown for 962 yards, six TDs, and two INTs. He has completed 68.6 percent of his passes.
The LSU rushing attack has averaged just 3.74 yards per carry. They scored just six touchdowns on the ground. Four of those came in the win over Southeastern Louisiana.
LSU has not won in Oxford since 2019. The Tigers will have to score points, and a lot of them, just like in 2023. Then the LSU defense must rise up, as they have all season, and shut down opposing drives when it counts. It’s the king of the play-callers, Lane Kiffin, versus LSU’s Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton. Who will out-scheme who? The winner of that chess game will win the football game.
