The No. 16 Utah Utes (3-0) are looking strong, and so is their new quarterback, Devon Dampier. The New Mexico transfer has led the Utes to an undefeated start. Utah will face its toughest challenge yet on September 20, when the No. 17 Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0) come to town.
While it’s hard not to be impressed with Utah as a whole, Dampier has found a way to stick out. Last year, the Utes’ QB struggles were glaring after Cam Rising had an unfortunate injury. Seeing some great QB play this season is a comforting sight for all Utes fans.
Utah fans have already rallied around their new QB. Giving himself the nickname “Spida” or “Spid4” after Spider-Man, fans all over the state are hoping he can continue his heroics on the field. This season, Dampier has garnered 628 passing yards, 7 passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. What makes Dampier special is his true dual-threat ability, gathering 128 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown.
With Big Noon Kickoff coming to Salt Lake City, Dampier will get his first shot to show off his talents on a national stage. While with the New Mexico Lobos, Dampier had his ups and downs. Last season, he threw for 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. While the turnovers were concerning, much of it can be chalked up to offensive line and weapon issues. Despite the problems in the air, Dampier scored 19 rushing touchdowns, showing he can impact the game outside the pocket.
Not only do the fans love him, but his teammates and coaches do as well. His progression and improvement from last season are clear as day. Head coach Kyle Whittingham had high praise for his new QB after his stellar start to the season. “His game resembles Kyler Murray. Kyler Murray is obviously a terrific quarterback, but Devon right now for us is doing a great job”, said Whittingham.
Whether it is through the air or on the ground, Dampier is going to impact the game. The hype around him is real, and he could eventually be a dark horse Heisman finalist. In prime time, the country will see why Devon Dampier is a QB that everyone needs to keep their eye on.
