MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh confirmed to ESPN that head coach Luke Fickell will return to lead the Badgers in 2026, marking a defining moment for the program’s direction and long-term stability. The decision comes with what McIntosh described as a “significant increase in financial investment” to elevate Wisconsin football back among the Big Ten’s elite.
“Chancellor (Jennifer) Mnookin and I are aligned on significantly elevating investment in our program to compete at the highest level,” McIntosh told ESPN. “We are willing to make an investment in infrastructure and staff. As important is our ability to retain and recruit players in this era.”
The statement ends weeks of speculation surrounding Fickell’s future with Wisconsin’s on-field struggles. Through three seasons, the Badgers sit at 15-19 overall and 2-6 this year, still searching for the consistency expected when Fickell arrived from Cincinnati in 2022.
McIntosh emphasized that the move is not about short-term results but about building sustainable success. “If Wisconsin is going to be as competitive as we expect, the support has to be as competitive. There’s no getting around it,” he said.
Fickell’s contract runs through 2031, and the commitment reflects the administration’s belief in his long-term vision. The increased funding will reportedly target staff expansion, upgraded infrastructure, and stronger recruiting resources, particularly in the evolving NIL and transfer-portal landscape.
This renewed backing signals a turning point for a program that has prided itself on discipline and development but now faces the realities of a modern college football arms race. Wisconsin appears ready to compete financially and structurally with the sport’s national powers.
While the Badgers’ current record underscores the urgency of improvement, McIntosh insists the foundation remains intact. “We have identified the ways in which we need to be successful, and we have a plan to be successful,” he said. “We are executing that plan.”
As Wisconsin turns its focus toward 2026, the decision represents both a show of confidence in Fickell and a clear challenge: with greater resources comes greater expectation

Jeremiah Smith wasn’t dominating defenders as usual; he was dominating the pregame buzz. Listed as questionable, his status sent shockwaves through the Buckeye faithful. Compounding the worries, his counterpart on the other side of the hash marks, Carnell Tate, was held out for a second week in a row. Turned out Smith played sparingly, and […]
