Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia and the Buckeyes have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Columbus, ending speculation that he could return to the NFL. Patricia, who has been in Columbus for one year, set historic numbers in his first season as defensive coordinator.
Matt Patricia and the Buckeyes ultimately fell short of their goal of repeating as national champions. Despite this, the team set numerous records and etched itself in history as one of the greatest single-season defenses in college football history. The team allowed just 9.3 points per game, the best mark in the FBS in 14 years, and just 219 yards per game. In addition, the team led the nation in scoring defensively.
The Buckeyes, unfortunately, lost many of their key defensive contributors to the NFL draft this offseason, including Caleb Downs, Davison Igbinosun, Kayden McDonald, Arvell Reese, Caden Curry, and Sonny Styles. In addition, the transfer portal took key pieces such as Bryce West, Aaron Scott Jr, and Jarquez Carter. This mass exodus is all too common in today’s college football landscape, and the Buckeyes will be prepared to properly replace the production lost. Led by Jaylen McClain, Kenyatta Jackson Jr, and Jermaine Mathews, the unit has the veteran presence needed to be successful next season. The Buckeyes also brought in key pieces such as Qua Russaw, James Smith, Cam Calhoun, Earl Little Jr, and Christian Alliegro.
This season is a big one for the Buckeyes, and the unforgiving gauntlet of a schedule will truly show what this team is made of right out of the gate. Matt Patricia is no stranger to tough competition, having led a dynasty in the New England Patriots. Buckeyes fans can sleep well knowing that the right man for the job will hold an office in Columbus, Ohio, for a very long time.
