The LSU Tigers (5-4) are languishing in a season that is not what they expected at this point in the season. After winning their first season opener in six seasons against Clemson, the Tigers’ once promising season has plummeted from great heights with a resounding thud.
Coming off a 11-point loss to Alabama in their lowest scoring output of the season, LSU must now regroup and prepare to battle yet another talented and productive mobile quarterback.
He is a signal-caller who leads the nation in total offense and the college football talking heads and talk shows are not talking about. That player is Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green.
No one that covers the sport for a living is talking about this guy is because the Razorbacks have won just two games this season and are winless in Southeastern Conference play.
With that said, how Green goes, so go the Razorbacks. He is the catalyst of a talented and productive Razorbacks’ offense. Green accounts for over 335.7 yards per game from his place behind center, tops in the nation.
So far this season, Green has passed for 2,372 yards, 19 TDs and eight interceptions. In addition, he has rushed for 649 yards and six more scores. As a team, Arkansas ranks No. 8 in the FBS in total offense.
Green and the Razorbacks could be looking at a very different season had a few plays gone their way in some of their losses. In fact, four of their losses were by three points or less (to Tennessee, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Memphis).
Green was hurt in the loss to Mississippi State, but has since been back to practice and appears to be on track to start against the only bright spot of the LSU football program right now, the Tigers’ defense. LSU ranks in the Top 20 in the FBS in scoring defense, allowing 19 points per game.
Green will be the fourth mobile quarterback they have faced this season, which has been the bane of the LSU defense in three of their four losses this season. Here is a look at how the previous three mobile quarterbacks fared against LSU this season:
One way that Green and the Razorbacks will be slowed down is that the game is being played in Tiger Stadium, “Death Valley.” Arkansas has not played well in that iconic venue. Since that epic Darren McFadden-led 50-48 win over No. 1 LSU in Death Valley in 2007, the Razorbacks have won only twice in Baton Rouge, in 2015 and 2021.
But just because the Razorbacks are on the wrong side of history when it comes to beating LSU on the road, nothing is impossible. Just ask Texas A&M. Anyone can be beat on any given Saturday. On this Saturday, LSU fans are praying to the football gods that the Tigers are on the winning side and snap a three-game losing streak.
