The Texas Tech Red Raiders are having a season for the ages. With a 10-1 record and one game left to play in the regular season, Texas Tech is preparing, for all intents and purposes, to roll into the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in two weeks, ready to play for the Big 12 Championship.
As a West Texas maelstrom on offense (42 points per game), Texas Tech is led by a talented backfield phenom that is a converted quarterback from his prep days in Austin, TX. Sophomore running back Cameron Dickey leads the Big 12 Conference in rushing yards (944) and rushing touchdowns (13).
Dickey leads a potent rushing attack that has gained over 2,100 yards and 27 TDs. On Tuesday, Dickey was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, given to the top running back in college football. Dickey looks to become the third Red Raider running back to win the prestigious award, following in the cleat marks of Bam Morris (’93) and Byron Hanspard (’96).
Averaging 5.62 yards per carry, Dickey has posted four games scoring multiple touchdowns, including a season-high 263 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-17 win over Kansas.
Since a four-point loss to Arizona State, Dickey has rushed for 313 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns.
Dickey has scored at least one rushing touchdown in 9-of-11 games this season. With the final regular-season game against West Virginia on Saturday, Dickey needs 56 yards to crack the 1,000-yard mark. In a few weeks, Dickey could be recognized as the top running back in college football.
In 11 weeks of college football, Dickey and his Red Raider brethren have captivated college football fans and the media, a red and black vortex that has left scorched earth in its wake on gridirons across the Big 12 as they ascend to the College Football Playoff.
