The No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels (11-1, 7-1 SEC) are in the College Football Playoffs, earning a home game against the No. 11 Tulane Green Wave (11-2, 7-1 AAC). Normally, after such a stellar season, the fact that the Rebels are in the playoffs would be the only reason they’re in the headlines. Unfortunately, after all the drama surrounding former head coach Lane Kiffin’s departure, Ole Miss has more distractions than it needs before the playoffs begin.
The reality is, Kiffin is gone. He is now the coach of the LSU Tigers. While that is tough to deal with right before a potential playoff run, Ole Miss has to let bygones be bygones. No matter what was truly said in that locker room during his exit, whether he tried to stay or not, he is no longer the coach of the Rebels and won’t be for the playoffs.
What cannot happen is walking into this game against Tulane with drama on the mind and taking an embarrassing loss to a Group of 5 champion. Tulane is a test, coaching drama aside, but they are nowhere near the Ole Miss level. The Rebels have to lock in. Because if they are busy thinking about the past, the Green Wave could wash away their future.
Former defensive coordinator Pete Golding is now a first-time head coach, responsible for leading the Rebels during this tumultuous time. Tulane’s current head coach, Jon Sumrall, has accepted a job as the head coach at Florida. However, unlike Kiffin, he will be sticking with Tulane through the playoffs. If the Rebels can block out the noise, they should be able to take care of business against a solid G5 school. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Ole Miss stands as a 17.5-point favorite.
The Rebels have Tulane beat in almost every metric. The Rebels average 37.3 points per game, while holding their opponents to 20.1. Tulane’s differential is a lot closer, scoring 29.1 per game and allowing 22.6. The Rebels are led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who will need to come up big against the Green Wave. In the regular season, Chambliss has thrown for just over 3,000 yards, 18 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
