For a team that received a ton of praise and hype in the preseason, Arizona State is slow out of the gate so far this season. With 17 starters coming back from a conference championship squad a season ago, the Sun Devils pitchfork is a little less sharp early on this season.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt is the returning starter at the most important position, but so far has not lived up to high expectations from the preseason. He is completing 58 percent of his passes and has thrown five TDs and three INTs in three games. In addition, he has added three rushing touchdowns.
Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is a Top 10 receiver nationally. He has caught 24 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. He averages 13.08 yards per catch.
Running back Raleek Brown has averaged 8.34 yards per carry in three games this season.
On defense, the Sun Devils are last in the Big 12 in pass defense. They have allowed 235 yards through the air this season. They do not force turnovers. However, they are ranked No. 2 in the conference in sacks.
QB Sawyer Robertson is one of the top gunslingers in the nation this season. He ranks in the top three in the FBS in passing yards (1,070), passing TDs (10) and pass attempts (135). Robertson leads the Big 12 in those categories.
Running back Bryson Washington has posted back-to-back games of over 100 yards rushing. He is coming off a 135-yard, two-touchdown performance in the 42-7 win over Samford. Washington leads the Big 12 in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
Linebacker Keaton Thomas leads the defense with 31 tackles.
The Baylor offense is talented and productive. Robertson has averaged 356.7 yards per contest via the forward pass. The Sun Devils pass defense will be hard pressed to stop the Bears passing offense.
Robertson should pick them apart while also giving them a healthy dose of Washington running between the tackles. Look for the Bears to get their first conference win of the season.
Final Score: Baylor 35 – Arizona State 24
